Nov 03, There were several models, from the older 3xx series to the newer 4xx series.
This article will cover only the Singer a Manual, which can be pretty useful for people who stumbled on some problems with the device, or are in need with a few good advices on how to exchange some of the parts within the machine. About the Singer a Manual. Vintage Singer fans have a leg up on some vintage sewing machine users, though.
Singer is such a big brand with such a long history that you can usually find what you need readily available. The Singer website allows you to shop by the model number of your machine.
This way, you can select exactly the right part without any doubt or confusion! If you feel confident about your skills and know enough to track down exactly the part you need, you can also find vintage sewing parts for sale on eBay and Etsy, among other places. The cost depends on the kind of part you need. First, give it a good cleaning regularly. If you just bought your machine, you may want to consider taking it to a sewing machine technician for a thorough once-over.
On the other hand, you may prefer to get to know your machine up close and personal. At home, though, you can use a small lint brush to clear away any fabric lint accumulated around the bobbin or in the thread path. You can also refer to the manual to see which areas require regular oiling. If you see a greasy greenish build-up anywhere in the machine, you may need to clean away old oil. Second, take extra care when working with the electrical components.
You can buy a replacement cord cheaply. Another simple way to keep your baby running for a long time is to make sure you understand the tension settings. You can teach yourself by reading the manual or find relevant Youtube videos if you need more visual instruction.
Finally, when in doubt, rethread the machine! Often even experienced sewers run into a snag when a thread slips a fraction of a millimeter off course inside the machine. Stop sewing, untangle thread as necessary from under the presser foot, and rethread the thread path and bobbin.
The main difference between the and the A is their manufacturing location. The sometimes called the G was manufactured overseas in Germany. The two machines do have a few functional differences as well. The has an external bobbin winder on top of the machine and a special thread control feature. Neither machine necessarily works better than the other. Sewers often recommend them interchangeably for home sewing or quilting purposes. You should at least have a better idea of the value and usefulness of the A model!

I remember when I was a kid, my mother, who was a seamstress, had a few of those older Singer sewing machines. Back then they looked cool to me and I thought that they worked flawlessly. For some reason, Singer decided to move the pin to the middle of the A from the back position where it was on on the A.
The A seems as complicated to use as the A is but it looks to have fewer dials to turn than the latter model. Both are said to be the top of the line for their respective series and that fact draws many comparisons between the two. The biggest difference between these two sewing machine models is that the A was built in America at the Anderson plant. The G was built in Germany and given German characteristics.
They both use the class 66 bobbin size and the direct-drive motor. The bobbin winder was on the top of the G but it seems not to be there for the A.
The latter of the two had a slant needle while the former seems to have the standard or traditional design. Finally, the G was lighter in weight than the A and the A had a double-needle decorative topstitch. The sewing machine only has a few differences from the original model. There is a drop-in bobbin, spool spindle on top, the elevated throat plate and that is it for the upgrades.
Also, the is supposed to be a straight stitcher. The throat plate seems to be standard with the Rockateer series. The bobbin winder folds up nicely on the If you look at both machines the is a very basic design that keeps everything nice and simple. People seem to rave more about the as it may have been one of the last Singer sewing machines with all metal parts. Plus, it sewed a very pretty satin stitch, and the clincher that makes this model so popular is that it can easily convert to a treadle machine.
Hard to compete with that but the A has lots of stitch patterns that make it a very versatile sewing machine. Then the other functions on the A make it a top model to have in your collection.
Both machines have their good and bad points with the A edging out the by a stitch or two. Like most sewing machines, you have to raise the take up lever to its highest point before you start to thread this sewing machine model.
What is unfortunate is that the Singer manual for this model doesn't use words to describe how to sew it. It only places a diagram on the page and moves on to the bobbin. From what we can see, you place the spool of thread on the pin and lead the thread to the first thread guide. Go through the guide and then head down to the tension disc and then go right to left on top of the disk. Before getting to the tension disk you need to put the thread through the right side of the next thread guide and on the way back up you put the thread on the left side.
Next, you put the thread right to left through the hole on the take-up lever and head back down through the next two thread guides. When you get to the needle, you go right to left through the eye. See the diagram at this link.
