Utility that scans your system files and a few other files for any that are missing or bad. If it finds problems it will ask you for the install CD or I if you have that on your hard drive and will replace any damaged or missing system files. XP, along with 2K from SP3 onward, are smart enough to understand patched files so a system file with a date later than your install CD or SP will not be replaced just because it is new. As to your other question, Does anyone know a good source to give precise directions on how to totally uninstall everything on the computer and reinstall it without problems?
Pretty drastic but all it requires is time and it will certainly give you a clean system. First, do all your back ups. I like to burn cds, other people prefer other hard drives, internal or external, and there are other ways, too, if you have a network, for example. Do not "uninstall" anything. If you see your icons highlighted in blue and horizontal or vertical lines across the desktop, check your mouse.
Do the buttons seem stuck, or do they click down and return to normal position with a clean, smooth motion? Select a photo that isn't huge for your background photo. Don't stretch or tile it. Select a background color, which will appear behind the photo. Then just set the background color for the icons to match the color you chose. They will no longer appear highlighted. Hi, did you ever figure out how to de-highlight the desktop icon text?? I just have been faced with the same problem, it happened out of the blue, so to speak! I've tried the various remedies to no avail. If you cracked the code, please tell me how it worked for you! Too funny, I did this yesterday but on purpose so that my icons on the desktop would be locked;meaning, they don't move after I reboot.
